Coverage

The outside of this home reveals the skill of the builders through the longevity of its standing. Save for one board, all of the exterior siding remains, and the window shutter and door all remain able to close fully. The house itself stands on brick pillars to raise it up from standing water, a possibility just as reasonable at its original construction as it is in this picture. The air slats are missing above both doors, leaving simply a large vent, but the overall construction of the home shows nearly every aspect of life that the enslaved builders considered when making these homes: protection from the elements; a covered and raised porch for weather protection while socializing; a chimney for cooking and warmth; and a yard surrounding the home for vegetable growth and cistern placement.
