Building A Nation: Analyzing the Material Evidence of Enslaved Peoples' Homes

Evergreen Daylight.jpg

This exhibit looks at some of the material and documatary evidence on the enslaved peoples' homes at Stagville and Evergreen Plantations in North Carolina and Louisiana, respectively.  From looking at the evidence, I argue that contrary to popular historical and contemporary notions that devalue these buildings are say they were shoddily constructed, the still extant homes and the documentary evidence alike reveal that the construction of these buildings took a tremendous amount of skill that has helped these homes withstand the test of time and be an ever-present and necessary, yet often overlooked and forgotten aspect of the history of enslavement in America.
